A Gift from the Heart

Norma Person’s transformative gift creates the Dr. John B. Reed Center for Cardiac Care

When Norma Person made the decision to give $5 million to Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Foundation, she wasn’t just making a gift — she was honoring a legacy while building the future of cardiovascular care in Sonoma County.

Her transformative donation will establish the Dr. John B. Reed Center for Cardiac Care on the fourth floor of the Hansel Family Care Center, creating an innovative facility that will expand access to outstanding cardiac care across Northern California.

Honoring a pioneer

The center will bear the name of John B. Reed, M.D., Sonoma County’s first cardiologist, who has spent more than five decades extending and saving lives throughout our community. Dr. Reed was named the 2024 Physician Champion Award recipient by Providence South Division Philanthropy for his incredible advocacy and commitment to the Sonoma County community.

“Dr. Reed has touched thousands of lives over his 50-year career,” Norma reflects. “He pioneered cardiovascular care in our region when there was none, and his dedication has set the standard for excellence that continues today. This center will ensure his legacy of healing continues for generations to come.”

A vision for the future

The Dr. John B. Reed Center for Cardiac Care will serve as Providence’s cardiovascular hub across Northern California, bringing together clinicians, researchers and educators under one roof. This collaborative environment will foster breakthrough discoveries and provide patients with access to the most advanced cardiac care close to home.

Expanding access and innovation

Norma’s gift will fund critical program enhancements, including leading-edge patient-centered technologies and increased support for underserved individuals affected by heart disease.

The center will also pioneer innovative research initiatives, giving the community early access to the latest developments in cardiovascular medicine.

“Every patient deserves the highest quality care, regardless of their circumstances,” Norma emphasizes. “This center will ensure that excellence in cardiac care is available to everyone in our community.”

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to attract top-tier cardiovascular specialists to Sonoma County, creating a multiplying effect that will benefit the entire region. Patients who might otherwise need to travel to San Francisco or other distant medical centers will now have access to world-class cardiac care locally.

Continuing a family tradition

Norma’s generosity continues the philanthropic legacy she and her late husband, Evert, established through their foundational support of the Norma and Evert Person Heart Institute. This latest gift brings their lifetime giving total to $20 million, supporting many initiatives at Memorial throughout the years and ensuring the highest quality care remains accessible in Sonoma County.

“Norma and Evert’s extraordinary giving exemplifies the spirit of community that makes our mission possible,” says Rebecca Kendall, chief philanthropy officer. “Her vision and commitment will impact countless lives for decades to come.”
